Introduction to Football Betting Markets

Football is the world's most bet-upon sport, and modern platforms offer a wide variety of markets beyond simply picking a winner. Understanding each market type — what it means, how it settles, and what information influences it — is essential before you stake any money. This guide covers the most widely used football betting markets.

1X2 (Match Result / Full Time Result)

The 1X2 is the most fundamental football bet:

  • 1 = Home team wins
  • X = Draw
  • 2 = Away team wins

This market settles on the 90-minute result (plus injury time), not extra time or penalties. It's the simplest market to understand and is available on virtually every professional match worldwide.

Over/Under Goals

This market removes the question of who wins and focuses purely on the total number of goals scored by both teams combined.

  • Over 2.5 goals: The match must have 3 or more goals for this bet to win.
  • Under 2.5 goals: The match must finish with 2 or fewer goals total.

The 2.5 line is the most popular, but markets commonly range from Over/Under 0.5 up to 4.5 or higher for high-scoring leagues. The decimal (2.5) ensures there is no exact tie — a match cannot end with "2.5 goals."

Both Teams to Score (BTTS)

Both Teams to Score (also called GG/NG from the Italian "Goal/No Goal") asks a simple yes or no question:

  • BTTS – Yes: Both teams must score at least one goal each.
  • BTTS – No: At least one team must finish the game without scoring (0–0, 1–0, 2–0, etc.).

This market is particularly popular for matches involving competitive teams where a clean sheet seems unlikely.

Double Chance

The Double Chance market lets you cover two of the three possible 1X2 outcomes in a single bet:

SelectionWins If...
1X (Home or Draw)Home win or draw
X2 (Draw or Away)Draw or away win
12 (Home or Away)Either team wins (no draw)

Because you're covering two outcomes, the odds are lower — but the probability of winning is higher.

Asian Handicap

Asian Handicap betting eliminates the draw as a possible outcome by giving one team a virtual head start or deficit. This makes every match effectively a two-way market.

  • −1 Handicap: The favoured team starts at −1. They must win by 2+ goals for the bet to win. A 1-goal win results in a push (stake refunded).
  • +1 Handicap: The underdog starts at +1. They must not lose by 2+ goals. A 1-goal defeat results in a push.
  • Split handicaps (e.g., −0.75): Your stake is split between two adjacent handicap lines, giving partial wins and losses.

Correct Score

You predict the exact final scoreline of the match. This is a high-odds, low-probability market — it's notoriously difficult to predict correctly, which is reflected in the attractive odds on offer. Approach this market with the understanding that even "likely" scorelines carry significant uncertainty.

Half-Time / Full-Time (HT/FT)

This combination market asks you to predict the result at both half-time and full-time. There are nine possible combinations (e.g., Home/Home, Draw/Away). Because you're predicting two results, odds are significantly higher than a standard 1X2 — but so is the difficulty.

Choosing the Right Market

Different markets suit different levels of knowledge:

  • Beginners: Start with 1X2, Over/Under, and BTTS — they're straightforward to understand.
  • Intermediate: Explore Double Chance and Asian Handicap for more nuanced options.
  • Advanced: Correct Score and HT/FT offer higher odds but require deeper analysis.

Understanding what each market is actually measuring — goals, outcomes, scorelines — helps you focus your research on the information that's actually relevant before making any decision.
